PCO Topographical Test

PCO TOPOGRAPHICAL SKILLS TEST

The PCO Topographical Skills Test assesses an applicant’s ability to read maps and plan routes using an A to Z. This test forms a required part of the PCO application process and must be passed before you can complete your PCO licence application.

We provide structured training designed to help applicants approach the test with clarity and confidence

At our centre, you receive:

  • Step-by-step training focused on test requirements
  • Practical guidance aimed at achieving a first-time pass
  • Free maps and study materials
  • Ongoing support throughout preparation
  • One-to-one assistance where needed

Approximately 150 minutes is required for a full training session.

There is no need to overcomplicate the PCO Topographical Skills Test. The assessment is straightforward and typically takes around 120 minutes to complete. The current pass mark set by Transport for London is 60%.

Topographical assessments must be taken at approved test centres. These are designated by TfL and must be booked directly through the official process.

Our role is to prepare you properly before test day. You will learn how to build your confidence and how questions are structured in a calm, focused environment. We will ensure you are prepared to approach the test in the right way, whatever your experience level or pace of learning.

TEST OUTLINE AND BREAKDOWN

The test is divided into five sections and is conducted in English. Training covers each section in detail so you know exactly what to expect.

  • Map-reading ability – Using a basic map to locate addresses, landmarks, and key points.
  • Local route selection – Planning efficient routes between nearby destinations.
  • Intermediate route selection – Selecting routes beyond an immediate area while remaining within standard operating boundaries.
  • Long-distance route selection – Planning journeys to destinations outside the immediate working area.
  • General topographical questions – Questions covering orientation, road layouts, and motorway awareness.

EXEMPTIONS

You may be exempt from the Topographical Skills Test if you meet specific criteria set by TfL, including:

  • Previously licensed private hire drivers who have already passed a TfL topographical assessment
  • Licensed taxi drivers
  • Professional tourist guides holding recognised qualifications

Eligibility for exemption is reviewed individually as part of the PCO licence application.

Note :

Topographical testing is no longer carried out privately. All assessments must be completed at TfL-approved centres. While testing itself is external, we continue to provide full preparation and premium support when you apply for the PCO.

Our experience with the PCO driver licence application process allows us to guide applicants through preparation with confidence. From training through to submission, we focus on removing uncertainty and helping you move forward without unnecessary delays.
